Smoking and Your Teeth

Smoking has been known to cause serious health issues with many areas of the body, but one that most people don’t think about is smoking’s effect on your teeth.

Smoking can cause oral issues such as stained teeth, bad breath and a lesser ability to taste the foods that you eat. Also, over a long period of time, smoking can cause gum or periodontal disease. This type of gum irritation can damage bone causing you to lose your teeth.

In addition to smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco can increase your risk of oral cancer. This type of tobacco is especially damaging to the health of your gums and teeth due to its direct use in the mouth.

We recognize the decision to quit smoking or chewing tobacco is very difficult. Come in to my office and we can discuss a plan that will not only help you quit this habit but also improve your oral health. We’re here to support you through the process of quitting and we want to be able to help find the best solution for you as an individual.
