Why Flossing is Important

For many people, the most dreaded aspect of dental care is flossing. Even if you’re someone who can’t think of anything worse than flossing, it’s important to remember why flossing is a crucial element of your dental hygiene.

Though there has recently been some debate in the news over whether flossing works the Journal of Dental Hygiene shows that flossing will help reduce gingivitis. When you choose not to floss you put yourself at risk for two major issues: gingivitis and cavities. Bacteria in your mouth can irritate gum tissue causing it to become inflamed and bleed easily. This can cause the growth of more bacteria in your mouth and put you at risk for gingivitis. Cavities are also more likely to occur with the presence of this bacteria in your mouth, making flossing that much more important.

If gingivitis is not treated, periodontal disease can occur, which is a much more serious and long-term issue. By flossing at least once a day you can reduce your risk for gingivitis, cavities and periodontal disease. Though some of us would rather skip this step in our daily routine it will keep you happier and healthier in the long run and as an avid flosser myself, I highly recommend it.
